Ralph Vaughan Williams - Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis
Jean Sibelius - Symphony No. 2 Op.43
The Welsh composer Grace Williams wrote Hen Walia (Old Walls) having been inspired by the surviving Roman fort of Sergontium, Caernarfon. Traditional Welsh folk songs are woven into this lively orchestral overture.
The awe inspiring Tallis Fantasia by Vaughan Williams was based on a psalm tune of 1567. It is set for double string orchestra and solo string quartet. Coming in at number 4 on Classic FM's Hall of Fame this year it is not to be missed!
Closely linked with Finnish nationalism, the 2nd Symphony of Sibelius epitomizes the brooding, mist shrouded forests of the composer's native land.
