in Gwendraeth Hall, Llanelli

Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra brings to Llanelli a programme of great music from the movies, introduced and conducted by Neath-born conductor

Michael Bell MBE.
Themes from blockbusters such as Star Wars, Ben-Hur and Spartacus; the animated classics How to train your Dragon, Chicken Run and The Polar Express; Hollywood musicals Chicago and The Sound of Music (60th anniversary of the film), not forgetting the much-loved E.T.

Our programme opens with Sir Arnold Bax’s magnificent orchestral picture of Tintagel Castle on the north Cornish coast, a place particularly associated with the mythology of King Arthur. 


Celebrated Cardiff-born violinist Charlie Lovell-Jones is the soloist in Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s beautiful and romantic violin concerto that takes its inspiration from Korngold’s film music from the golden age of Hollywood. 

More pictures complete the concert as we take you on a tour of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition in the stunning orchestration by Maurice Ravel.

Rosie Biss, 'Cello


CPO returns to BBC Hoddinott Hall and opens the concert with Sir Malcolm Arnold’s exuberant English Dances.


Distinguished Principal Cello of Welsh National Opera, Rosie Biss, returns to perform with CPO following an unforgettable performance of Elgar’s Cello Concerto in June 2024. For this concert Rosie will be the soloist in Dvorak’s much-loved romantic and nostalgic Cello Concerto.


Completing the programme is the most famous, controversial and iconic work of the 20th Century, Stravinsky’s ballet The Rite of Spring.
